I tend to use the sword until I get the shotgun ability. (and the objective does exist, but you have to get the giant laser ability)
Edit: I use the Wonderbolt thing to shoot the hostile plants
You should find the Steam Group of this game. There's a discussion in there where people show there spell recipes to make cool or powerful spell with the current elements.
